So far I’ve touched on codification and prescriptivism. But, what are some tangible examples of this happening: Dictionaries and grammars.

Samuel Johnson is the author of A Dictionary of the English Language. Johnson’s dictionary was published in 1755, near the end of the EModE linguistic phase. Johnson’s dictionary gave the British a real sense of identity. Another result was that the standardization of the English language really began to take root.

We leave EModE and Samuel Johnson and head into Early Modern English where we explore the expansion of the English language across the globe.
