Recall in the EModE period Samuel Johnson gave us A Dictionary of the English Language, which started the standardization and codification conversation. Johnson’s dictionary gave the British a real sense of identity. After America’s independence, Noah Webster gave the American lexicon an equal “identity and status” (Crystal 85). In 1828, Webster published his An American Dictionary of the English Language in two volumes.
This brings us to the idea of lexical fields, which I discuss in the next slide.
